Hi!
This makes total sense when you think about it.
But not many people do.
If you want to stay protected from the rain, you wear WATERproof gear.
If you want to stay protected from the wind, you wear WINDproof gear.
But, did you know, every single bit of WATERproof gear Adventure Spec makes is also 100% WINDproof.
I know, maybe we should have a windproof category on our website.
Let me explain.
It's all down to our PU membrane.
The thinnest layer of film that's laminated into all our waterproof fabric that not only keeps water out, but also the wind.
So let's take a look at our Aqua Pac Jacket for a minute.
We designed this to be super simple, super packable and super waterproof.
The extra layer that just lives in your pack for the majority of your riding, and only makes an appearance when you really need it.
It's constructed from a three layer fabric.
On the outside we have 240 denier nylon 6-6 ripstop fabric. This is heavier than you might find in a hiking jacket, but much lighter than you would find in a traditional textile motorcycle jacket. It's tough enough for moto durability, but light enough to pack away.
Laminated to this 240 D is a layer of hydrophilic PU film. It's about 0.03mm thick, so incredibly thin. This provides water resistance up to a hydrostatic head of 30 meters. The hydrophilic bit means that it allows water vapour to pass through it on a molecular level so it breathes as you build up a sweat.
And laminated to this is the final layer, a lightweight fabric that is designed to be comfortable when sitting next to your skin.
If I've not lost you, and you really want to dive into this in more detail (with examples) take a look at this soon-to-be-released film about our Gravel Jacket and Pant. Skip to 24:14 where Jim will show you exactly what I've been writing about.
Well, not so long ago I was out riding with Chris.
It's that time of year when the seasons are starting to change.
In the middle of the day it's blue skies, the sun is out, life is good and you are toasty hot.
But the minute that sun starts to dip, so does the temperature.
And then the wind picks up.
It's not cold-cold, but you are certainly not sweating any more.
We pulled over and Chris grabbed his Aqua Pac Jacket out of his pack.
In just a few seconds it went over his Mongolia Jacket and we finished the day in total comfort.
Not a spot of rain, but the waterproof jacket was the game changer.
I'm not going to lie, I've suffered a long cold ride on more than one occasion when all I needed to do was put on my waterproof layer.
It took a windy evening riding with Chris to enlighten me.
It may not be raining, but that waterproof layer in your pack may just save your day.
